I build cabinets for a living, and blue is the color I get asked about most. These are kitchens by designers whose work I admire, each credited and linked and here with the designer’s permission, plus one of our own.
Kanika Design, Daly City, CA

Kanika Design took an outdated 1980s kitchen and put a bold navy, Blue Lagoon, on the lower cabinets, with white uppers above. Grey tile floors, quartz counters and a hexagon backsplash keep everything else quiet, so the navy stays the star, and champagne brass knobs warm it up. If you want blue but are nervous about a whole blue kitchen, this two-tone split is the way I’d do it.
Jeff Schlarb Design Studio, San Francisco, CA

Jeff Schlarb went all the way: a saturated cobalt on the island, the perimeter cabinets and the range hood, framed by an arched opening painted the same blue. White marble on the counters and backsplash keeps it crisp, and brass stools and hardware warm it up. This is the kitchen for someone who wants blue to be the whole point, not an accent.
Crafted Cabinetry, Concord, CA

One of ours, so you can see how we’d build it: white Shaker cabinets around the room and a big island painted a pale blue, under a white quartz top. The island seats five, so it carries the color without the kitchen ever feeling dark. If you love blue but want the room to stay light, put it on the island and nowhere else.
How to get a blue kitchen like these
Every kitchen here is custom: cabinets sized to the room and finished in a color chosen for it. That is what we build. Plywood boxes, full-extension dovetail drawers and soft-close hinges come standard, and every kitchen is delivered fully assembled, in the Bay Area or anywhere in the US.
