What does “American-made” mean for kitchen cabinets?
In everyday use it means the cabinets were built in the United States. As a marketing claim it means more than that. Under the Federal Trade Commission’s rule, a plain “Made in USA” claim requires that all or virtually all of the product is made here, with no more than a negligible share of foreign content. A cabinet assembled here from imported parts can say “Assembled in USA”, but not plain “Made in USA”.
That gap is why two sellers can both sound American and be describing very different kitchens. One builds boxes, doors and drawers from raw material in a U.S. shop. The other unpacks imported components and screws them together.
Why do people look for American-made cabinets?
- Built to order, not shipped from stock. A domestic shop can build to your measurements after the room is drawn, rather than selling the nearest stock size.
- Someone to talk to. The people who build the cabinets are reachable during the job, in your time zone, which matters when a measurement or a finish needs a decision.
- Known materials. Composite wood sold in the United States has to meet the EPA’s formaldehyde emission limits under TSCA Title VI. A U.S. shop can tell you exactly what each part is made of, because it bought the material.
- Supporting a local trade. For many people this is reason enough.

How do you check a “Made in USA” claim?
Ask these in writing, and expect specific answers:
- Where are the cabinet boxes cut and assembled? A city and state, not “domestically”.
- Where are the doors and drawer boxes made?
- Do the cabinets arrive fully assembled, or as flat panels to build on site?
- What are the box sides, back and bottom made of, and how thick?
- Are the cabinets built to your measurements, or chosen from stock sizes?
- Can you see samples of the door and finish before you commit?
A seller who builds here answers these easily. Vague answers, or answers about where the company is based rather than where the cabinet is made, are the signal to keep asking.
Are American-made cabinets better?
Origin alone does not make a cabinet good. A well-built imported cabinet beats a careless domestic one. What a U.S. shop that builds to order does change is how much of the cabinet you can specify, see and question before it is made, and who answers when something needs fixing afterwards.
So compare like for like: box material and thickness, drawer construction, hinges, how the cabinet arrives, and the warranty, with the origin as one line on the list rather than the whole decision.
Can you buy American-made custom cabinets if you are not near the shop?
Yes. Custom cabinets no longer require a showroom down the road. The design can happen remotely, with drawings, renderings and physical door and finish samples mailed to your home, and the finished cabinets can travel fully assembled.
